Toledo is known as the City of the Three Cultures, a name that refers to the Christians, Islamic and Jewish cultures that coexisted for centuries. This blending of traditions is reflected on Toledo’s architecture, where it can be seen the Mudejar style, a fusion of Islamic and Christian styles, which predominates in the city. In esteem of its uniqueness, in 1989 Toledo was declared by the UNESCO a cultural heritage of humanity: it is about impossible to walk the streets of Toledo without coming across an ancient mosque, a Gothic or Mudejar church, a Romanesque or Visigothic structure, a synagogue, or a Renaissance palace. Sitting on a large hill, "Old Toledo" is encircled on three sides by the Tagus River. This old city retains its medieval road plan. Some of the main attractions are the Alcazar, the House of El Greco, dedicated to the great master painter, and the Cathedral, which was started to build in 1226.
